Goalie Evolution Academy
The Goalie Evolution Academy is an eight-week, advanced clinic for goalies who aspire to become elite lacrosse goalies.
The Evolution Continues
Trevor Tierney (Princeton University ’01) and Ryan LaPlante (University of Denver ’15) created the Goalie Evolution Academy in 2015 for the athletic and personal development of the next generation of field lacrosse goalies. The Goalie Evolution Academy is an eight-week, advanced clinic for goalies aged 10 to 18 who aspire to become elite lacrosse goalies. Each session will be limited to 8 spaces so each goalie receives individualized attention from Ryan LaPlante and Trevor Tierney.
The goal of the GEA is to make the goalie position as simple as possible and to teach goalies to be consistent and reactionary goalies. The eight-week GEA curriculum will build the foundation and core principles that each goalie can rely on every time they step on the field. At each session, we will focus on form, technique, reaction speed, mental approach to the position, athleticism, and lacrosse IQ. Mastery of these skills in goal will give goalies the opportunity to be successful and, most important of all, consistent in net.
We will run small group training sessions throughout 2026, and will email parents of goalies on our interest list with priority invitations to register as they become available. Boys and girls goalies in graduation years 2027-2034 are eligible to participate in Goalie Evolution Academy programs. Click on “JOIN INTEREST LIST” above to add players in those grad years to our interest list. Players in graduation year 2035 are also welcome to join the interest list for programming in future seasons.
Once we have finalized program details, we will email everyone on the interest list- you do not need to contact us. Please note that demand for GEA placement is incredibly strong- we recommend registering immediately if you are offered a position in one of our Goalie Evolution Academy clinics.
Coaching Staff
COACH TREVOR TIERNEY
Trevor Tierney is the only goalie in the history of the game to have won an NCAA Championship (with Princeton University in 1998 and 2001), an MLL Championship (with Baltimore Bayhawks in 2005), and an ILF World Championship (with Team USA in 2002). Trevor won the NCAA DI Outstanding Goalie of The Year as he led the nation in save percentage and goals-against average. He grew up learning how to play goalie from his father, Coach Bill Tierney, and all of the greatest goalies of that time including Larry Quinn, Quint Kessenich, Scott Bacigalupo, Bill Daye, and Sal Locascio. From that background, he created a curriculum entitled the, “Evolution In Goaltending” to help younger goalies that is available to watch for free on YouTube. Trevor also served as an assistant coach at the University of Denver for six years, where he coached the goalies and helped guide the team to their first-ever National Championship.
COACH RYAN LAPLANTE
Ryan LaPlante grew up playing lacrosse in Colorado. Trevor and Ryan started working together when Ryan was 13 years old. Ryan grew into one of the top collegiate goalies in the nation at the DI level at the University of Denver where he was the starting goalie for four years and led the University of Denver to win the 2015 National Championship. Ryan is the career leader in saves and wins for the University of Denver, NCAA All-Tournament Team ’15, and Big East Goalkeeper of the Year ‘14. Ryan continued his playing career in the MLL for the Denver Outlaws in 2015 and 2016. In 2017 and 2018 Coach LaPlante was a member of the University of Denver coaching staff as a goalie coach. Ryan has taken what he learned from Trevor and shaped it into his own style and built upon it to pass down to future generations of goalies.
